Getting Started with Hangul

Hangul (한글) is one of the most scientific and logical writing systems ever created. Invented by King Sejong the Great in 1443, it was designed so that anyone could learn to read and write — and you can too.

Why Hangul is Easier Than You Think

Unlike Chinese characters or Japanese kanji, Hangul is an alphabet. It has just 14 basic consonants and 10 basic vowels. These combine into syllable blocks that are surprisingly intuitive once you understand the system.

The beauty of Hangul is that each letter represents a single sound, and the shapes of the letters actually hint at how your mouth should form them.

The Basic Consonants

Here are the 14 basic consonants:

LetterSoundName
g/k기역 (giyeok)
n니은 (nieun)
d/t디귿 (digeut)
r/l리을 (rieul)
m미음 (mieum)
b/p비읍 (bieup)
s시옷 (siot)
ng/silent이응 (ieung)
j지읒 (jieut)
ch치읓 (chieut)
k키읔 (kieuk)
t티읕 (tieut)
p피읖 (pieup)
h히읗 (hieut)

The Basic Vowels

And the 10 basic vowels:

LetterSoundExample
a (as in "father")아 (a)
ya야 (ya)
eo (as in "bus")어 (eo)
yeo여 (yeo)
o (as in "go")오 (o)
yo요 (yo)
u (as in "blue")우 (u)
yu유 (yu)
eu (no English equivalent)으 (eu)
i (as in "see")이 (i)

How Syllable Blocks Work

Korean is written in syllable blocks, not individual letters strung together. Each block contains 2-4 letters arranged in a specific pattern:

Pattern 1: Consonant + Vowel (CV)

  • 가 = ㄱ + ㅏ (ga)
  • 나 = ㄴ + ㅏ (na)

Pattern 2: Consonant + Vowel + Consonant (CVC)

  • 한 = ㅎ + ㅏ + ㄴ (han)
  • 글 = ㄱ + ㅡ + ㄹ (geul)

So 한글 (Hangul) = 한 (han) + 글 (geul) — two syllable blocks, six individual letters.

Try It Yourself

Now that you know the basics, try reading these common Korean words:

  1. 사랑 (sarang) — love
  2. 한국 (hanguk) — Korea
  3. 학교 (hakgyo) — school
  4. 감사 (gamsa) — gratitude
