What Anki doesn't do for Korean

Anki is the best flashcard tool ever built. It's also only a flashcard tool. Here's what a full learning platform adds.

Your Anki decks transfer directly

You don't lose your work. Import your .apkg file and your cards are in — with the same front/back format you built. You can also bring CSVs, vocab lists, or textbook word lists. From there, the app generates exercises from your material automatically.

Recognition vs production

Anki shows a card. You flip it and decide if you knew it. That's recall, but it's easy to fool yourself — the answer is right there. Chamelingo generates production exercises from your decks: type the Korean from an English prompt, build the sentence from scrambled pieces, listen and transcribe. Harder, and it builds a different kind of retention.

Battle friends with your own decks

Take the vocab you've been drilling in Anki and put it into Arena mode. You and your study partner queue up with the same word set and go head-to-head in real time. Knowing you're going to get tested by another person — not just a card flip — changes how carefully you actually learn each word.

A curriculum, not just cards

Anki is a blank canvas. It doesn't know you're learning Korean, doesn't explain particles, doesn't sequence topics. Chamelingo has a structured curriculum from Hangul to intermediate conversation — with grammar explanations, example sentences, and exercises that build on each other. Use your own decks alongside it, or follow the curriculum, or both.

Ask questions about what you're reviewing

When you're reviewing a card in Anki and you can't remember why a grammar form is used, you google it. In Chamelingo, you press a button and ask the AI tutor in real time. It understands both Korean and English, pulls up relevant examples, and remembers what you've been struggling with.

Audio, structure, and social — built in

Every word in Chamelingo's curriculum has native speaker audio. The app has co-op study mode, spectator mode, and ranked seasons. Anki can have audio if you find the right deck, and community decks exist — but the quality and completeness varies wildly. Chamelingo's Korean content is curated and consistent.

The card flip problem

When you flip a card and the answer is right there, it's easy to convince yourself you knew it. You see the answer, feel recognition, and click "Good." But recognition and production are different skills. You can recognize a word in a multiple choice question and still blank on it when you're trying to construct a sentence.

Production exercises force the harder retrieval. Type the Korean from an English prompt with no options visible. Build the sentence from scrambled words. Listen once and transcribe. Get it wrong and it comes back tomorrow. Get it right three times under pressure and it actually goes into long-term memory.

Your Anki decks are good starting material. Chamelingo turns them into production practice.
