으로/로: Korean Direction and Means Particle
Written by Erik Claesson · Founder of Chamelingo · Korean learner · Software engineer
으로/로 is one of Korean’s most useful multi-purpose particles. It can mark direction, transportation, a tool or method, a role, or a change into something.
Think of its core idea as the route or means by which something happens.

Form rule
Use:
- 으로 after most final consonants
- 로 after a vowel
- 로 after a final ㄹ
Examples:
- 집 → 집으로
- 학교 → 학교로
- 길 → 길로
That ㄹ exception is the part beginners most often forget.
1. Direction: toward
- 오른쪽으로 가세요. → Go to/toward the right.
- 서울로 가요. → I am going toward/to Seoul.
- 이 길로 가세요. → Go this way / take this road.
Compare this with 에:
- 학교에 가요. → I go to school. Destination.
- 학교 쪽으로 가요. → I go in the direction of school.
In everyday Korean there is overlap, but 으로/로 often makes the route or direction more prominent.
2. Transportation and means
- 버스로 가요. → I go by bus.
- 지하철로 왔어요. → I came by subway.
- 카드로 계산해요. → I pay by card.
- 젓가락으로 먹어요. → I eat with chopsticks.
This use answers how? or with what?
3. Role or status
- 선생님으로 일해요. → I work as a teacher.
- 대표로 참석했어요. → I attended as a representative.
Here 으로/로 means roughly as / in the role of.
4. Change or material
- 얼음으로 변했어요. → It changed into ice.
- 나무로 만들었어요. → It was made from/of wood.
Context tells you whether the particle describes what something becomes or what it is made with/from.
Common mistakes
Forgetting the ㄹ exception
Wrong: 길으로 가세요.
Preferred: 길로 가세요.
Treating every destination as 으로/로
For a simple beginner sentence like “I go to school,” 학교에 가요 is the safest default. Use 으로/로 when direction, route, or means matters.
Translating one English preposition at a time
English “by,” “with,” “as,” and “toward” can all map to 으로/로. Learn the Korean function instead of memorizing one English equivalent.
Mini practice
Translate:
- I go by taxi. → 택시로 가요.
- Please go to the left. → 왼쪽으로 가세요.
- I pay by card. → 카드로 계산해요.
- I work as a designer. → 디자이너로 일해요.
