TOPIK Study Guide: How to Prepare for the Korean Proficiency Test
TOPIK Study Guide: Everything You Need to Know
The Test of Proficiency in Korean (TOPIK / 한국어능력시험) is the official Korean language proficiency test administered by the Korean government. Whether you need it for university admission, employment, or visa purposes, here's how to prepare.
What is TOPIK?
TOPIK is offered 6 times per year in Korea and 2-4 times internationally. It's divided into two levels:
- TOPIK I — Beginner (Levels 1-2)
- TOPIK II — Intermediate/Advanced (Levels 3-6)
Your score determines your level. You don't "fail" — you just get placed at whatever level your score reflects.
TOPIK I Format
| Section | Questions | Time | Score |
|---|---|---|---|
| Listening | 30 questions | 40 min | 100 |
| Reading | 40 questions | 60 min | 100 |
- Level 1: 80+ points total
- Level 2: 140+ points total
No writing or speaking sections at TOPIK I. It's all multiple choice.
TOPIK II Format
| Section | Questions | Time | Score |
|---|---|---|---|
| Listening | 50 questions | 60 min | 100 |
| Writing | 4 questions | 50 min | 100 |
| Reading | 50 questions | 70 min | 100 |
- Level 3: 120+ points
- Level 4: 150+ points
- Level 5: 190+ points
- Level 6: 230+ points
Study Strategy by Level
For TOPIK I (Levels 1-2)
This is achievable after 3-6 months of consistent study. Focus on:
- Hangul mastery — You need to read quickly, not sound out each letter
- Core vocabulary — 800-1,500 words covering daily life topics
- Basic grammar patterns — Present, past, future tense; particles (은/는, 이/가, 을/를); connectors (그리고, 그래서, 하지만)
- Listening practice — Get used to the audio speed and question format
- Past papers — The question format is consistent. Practice with real past exams
For TOPIK II (Levels 3-6)
This requires dedicated study. The writing section is where most people lose points.
- Expand vocabulary to 3,000-5,000+ words — Academic, abstract, and formal vocabulary
- Grammar depth — Complex connectors (-는데, -더니, -는 바람에), reported speech, passive/causative
- Writing practice — Practice the 200-300 word essay and the 600-700 word essay format
- Reading speed — You have limited time per question. Practice scanning techniques
- Listening endurance — 60 minutes of Korean audio requires stamina

Timeline
| Goal | Study Time | Hours/Week |
|---|---|---|
| TOPIK I Level 1 | 2-3 months | 5-7 hours |
| TOPIK I Level 2 | 4-6 months | 5-7 hours |
| TOPIK II Level 3 | 8-12 months | 7-10 hours |
| TOPIK II Level 4 | 12-18 months | 7-10 hours |
| TOPIK II Level 5-6 | 18-30 months | 10+ hours |
These are rough estimates assuming consistent daily study. Immersion (living in Korea, Korean-speaking friends) can dramatically accelerate this.
