Korean Location Particles: 에 vs 에서
One of the most common beginner mistakes in Korean is mixing up 에 and 에서. Both relate to locations, but they serve different purposes.
에, Direction or Static Location
Use 에 when you're talking about:
- Where you're going (direction)
- Where something exists (static location)
- Time expressions
| Korean | English | Usage |
|---|---|---|
| 학교에 가요 | I go to school | direction |
| 집에 있어요 | I am at home | static location |
| 3시에 만나요 | Let's meet at 3 o'clock | time |
에서, Action Location
Use 에서 when you're doing an action at a place:
| Korean | English | Usage |
|---|---|---|
| 집에서 공부해요 | I study at home | action at location |
| 카페에서 커피를 마셔요 | I drink coffee at the cafe | action at location |
| 학교에서 한국어를 배워요 | I learn Korean at school | action at location |
The Key Difference
Think of it this way:
- 에 = destination or position (no action happening at the place)
- 에서 = the place where you do something
Same place, different particles:
- 도서관에 가요 → I go to the library (movement)
- 도서관에서 공부해요 → I study at the library (action)

Quick decision guide
Ask yourself two questions:
- Is there movement toward a place? → 에 (가요, 와요, 도착해요)
- Is an action happening there? → 에서 (공부해요, 먹어요, 일해요)
If something simply exists at a place with 있어요 / 없어요, use 에:
- 가방이 책상 에 있어요 → The bag is on the desk
- 시간이 없어요 is not a location case. But 집에 시간이 없어요 is rare; stick to 집에 있어요 for presence
Common mistakes
| Mistake | Why it feels wrong | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| 학교에서 가요 | 가요 is movement, not an action done at school | 학교에 가요 |
| 집에 공부해요 | Studying is an action at the location | 집에서 공부해요 |
| 카페에 만나요 | Meeting is an action | 카페에서 만나요 |
| 3시에서 만나요 | Clock time uses 에, not 에서 | 3시에 만나요 |
Note: Some fixed phrases break the “action = 에서” intuition later (e.g. abstract “from” uses 에서: 서울에서 왔어요 = I came from Seoul). For beginners, master location first; treat “from a place” as a separate pattern.

Practice on Chamelingo
Location particles are covered early in the Chamelingo curriculum. Exercises force the 에/에서 choice in travel, daily-life, and “where is…?” scenarios so the rule sticks under pressure. Not only on a static chart.
