Unit 14: Invitation & Planssimultaneous-actionwhile

동사 + -(으)면서

동사+-(으)면서
Share

Explanation

Do two actions simultaneously. "While doing A, (also doing) B."

Examples

-(으)면서: complete usage guide

-(으)면서 marks simultaneous or closely linked actions: 음악을 들으면서 공부해요.

The subject is usually the same in both clauses. Switching subjects often needs a different connector.

Descriptive verbs can appear too: 슬프면서도 웃었어요 (sad and yet smiling). Nuance depends on tone.

Do not confuse with -고 (and then) which sequences actions without requiring overlap.

Level: elementary. Read the pattern, say each example out loud, then write two new sentences of your own before moving on.

After you can produce the form, open related Chamelingo pages (vocabulary, conjugator, particles) so the pattern connects to words you actually study.

Usage notes

  • Register: learn the polite 요 form first unless this page is specifically about formal 습니다 style.
  • Production tip: use the pattern in a short dialogue (question + answer) the same day you study it.

More examples

걸으면서 전화했어요.

일하면서 한국어를 배워요.

I learn Korean while working.

Common mistakes

  • Do not translate English word-for-word into “-(으)면서”: match Korean order and speech level.
