불교의 창시자(기원전 ?~기원전 ?). 네팔의 한 지방에서 태어났고 29세에 출가하여 35세에 보리수 아래에서 깨달음을 얻어 부처가 되었다고 한다. 인도 각지를 다니며 가르침을 전하다가 80세에 죽었다.
