-도록 Korean Grammar: So That, Until, and Extent
Written by Erik Claesson · Founder of Chamelingo · Korean learner · Software engineer
-도록 is difficult because English learners meet it under several translations:
- so that
- in order to
- until
- to the point that
- make sure to... in -도록 하다
Instead of memorizing five unrelated English phrases, learn the shared idea of a target, limit, or extent.

1. Purpose: so that
모두 들을 수 있도록 크게 말했어요.
I spoke loudly so that everyone could hear.
The first action is performed toward a desired result.
This overlaps with purpose patterns such as -기 위해(서), but the sentence structure and nuance are not always interchangeable.
Compare -(으)려고 vs -기 위해서 after this section.
2. Prevention or desired result
실수하지 않도록 조심하세요.
Be careful so that you don't make a mistake.
This “so that X does/doesn't happen” use is extremely practical in advice and instructions.
3. Extent
목이 아프도록 노래했어요.
I sang until/to the point that my throat hurt.
Here -도록 describes the extent reached by the action.
English may use “until,” “so much that,” or “to the point that” depending on the sentence.
4. -도록 하다
This construction deserves separate attention:
매일 복습하도록 하세요.
Make sure to review every day.
늦지 않도록 할게요.
I'll make sure not to be late.
Depending on subject and context, -도록 하다 can sound like an instruction, arrangement, or commitment to make a result happen.
Do not translate 하다 mechanically as “do” here. Learn the construction as a whole.
-도록 vs -게
Both can appear in result/purpose-like structures:
잘 보이도록 크게 써 주세요.
Please write it large so that it is easy to see.
잘 보이게 크게 써 주세요.
Please write it large so it can be seen well.
There can be overlap, but register, collocation, and sentence focus influence which sounds more natural. -도록 is common in instructions and more structured explanatory language.
-도록 vs -기 위해(서)
-기 위해(서) explicitly states “in order to” purpose.
-도록 often focuses more on making a result/condition possible or reaching an extent.
Compare:
합격하기 위해 매일 공부해요.
I study every day in order to pass.
시험에서 실수하지 않도록 매일 연습해요.
I practice every day so that I don't make mistakes on the test.
Practice by function
Write one sentence for each:
- purpose/result
- prevention
- extent
- -도록 하다 instruction
That prevents you from learning only one English translation.
