Korean 하다 Verbs: A Shortcut to More Vocabulary
Written by Erik Claesson · Founder of Chamelingo · Korean learner · Software engineer
One of the best vocabulary shortcuts in Korean is noun + 하다.
하다 means “to do,” and many action nouns combine with it to make verbs:
- 공부 → study
- 공부하다 → to study
- 운동 → exercise
- 운동하다 → to exercise
- 준비 → preparation
- 준비하다 → to prepare
This pattern is useful because one vocabulary item can give you both a noun and a verb.
The basic pattern
Think of it as:
action noun + 하다 = do that action
Examples:
Do not memorize the noun and verb as totally unrelated entries. Store the connection.
The form you will actually say
Dictionary:
- 공부하다
Polite present:
- 공부해요. → I study.
Past:
- 공부했어요. → I studied.
Future plan:
- 공부할 거예요. → I am going to study.
The 하다 → 해요 change is extremely common, so it is worth making automatic early.
See the verb conjugation guide for the wider system.
Add an object or topic
하다 verbs work inside normal Korean sentence structure.
- 한국어를 공부해요. → I study Korean.
- 매일 운동해요. → I exercise every day.
- 여행을 준비해요. → I prepare for a trip.
- 방을 청소해요. → I clean the room.
Notice that the noun inside the 하다 verb does not need a separate English translation in the sentence. The whole expression acts as the verb.
Sometimes you will hear noun + 을/를 하다
Korean can also separate the noun and 하다:
- 공부를 해요.
- 운동을 해요.
- 청소를 해요.
These still mean:
- study
- exercise
- clean
For beginners, it is useful to recognize both:
- 공부해요.
- 공부를 해요.
The exact choice depends on context and emphasis.
Review 을/를 if the object marker is still unfamiliar.

These are not the only useful 하다 verbs. They are a practical starting set.
Learn the noun meaning too
If you only memorize the verb, you may miss the same word when it appears as a noun.
Example:
- 준비하다 → to prepare
- 준비가 필요해요. → Preparation is necessary.
Or:
- 설명하다 → to explain
- 설명이 쉬워요. → The explanation is easy.
Knowing the noun-verb relationship makes new sentences easier to parse.
Do not attach 하다 to every noun
The pattern is productive, but it is not unlimited.
You cannot assume that any English noun can become a Korean verb by adding 하다.
Learn combinations you actually encounter.
A dictionary lookup is useful when you are unsure. Try the Korean dictionary.
하다 verbs and Sino-Korean vocabulary
Many formal or abstract 하다 verbs are built from Sino-Korean nouns.
Examples:
- 설명(說明) + 하다 → explain
- 준비(準備) + 하다 → prepare
- 확인(確認) + 하다 → confirm
- 결정(決定) + 하다 → decide
This is one reason Sino-Korean word families become more useful as your vocabulary grows.

A useful study trick
Whenever you learn a new action noun, ask:
Does this naturally combine with 하다?
If yes, save both forms together.
Example card:
준비 = preparation
준비하다 = to prepare
여행을 준비해요. = I prepare for a trip.
Now one card teaches three connected pieces instead of one isolated translation.
Mini practice
Turn the noun into a polite present verb.
- 공부 → 공부해요.
- 운동 → 운동해요.
- 준비 → 준비해요.
- 설명 → 설명해요.
- 연습 → 연습해요.
Then make one sentence with each.
