How to use 안녕하세요 in Korean

annyeonghaseyo

About this word

안녕하세요 is the default polite greeting for most adults, teachers, coworkers, shop staff, and people you are meeting for the first time. It works at most times of day.

Use 안녕 only with close friends, children, or people who have agreed to speak casually. 안녕하십니까 is a much more formal, deferential greeting. 여보세요 is used on the phone, not as an ordinary face-to-face hello.

안녕히 가세요 and 안녕히 계세요 are goodbyes, not alternate hellos. Say 안녕히 가세요 to the person who is leaving; say 안녕히 계세요 when you are leaving and the other person is staying.

The -세요 form contains the honorific marker -시-, but 안녕하세요 is best learned as a fixed polite greeting rather than translated word by word.
