How Hangul typing speed is measured
This free Hangul typing speed test scores Korean input by characters per minute (CPM). Because Hangul syllables are complete Unicode characters, CPM is a clearer speed metric than English-style WPM alone. We still show WPM using the common five-characters-per-word conversion so results are easy to compare and share.
Choose short syllable drills if you are still learning the Korean keyboard layout. Switch to words and phrases once you can type common hangul blocks without hunting for keys. Accuracy matters: high speed with low accuracy is not useful for chat, classwork, or TOPIK writing practice.
- Primary metric: net CPM (correct characters per minute)
- Secondary metric: WPM ≈ net CPM ÷ 5
- Paste is blocked so results reflect real typing
- Works with 2-set and 3-set Korean keyboards on desktop and mobile
Frequently asked questions
What is a good Hangul typing speed?
Beginners often land under 80 characters per minute (CPM). Developing typists are around 80-140 CPM. Fluent conversational typing is often 140-200 CPM. Native-like speed is commonly above 200 CPM, with accuracy above 90%.
Why does this test use CPM instead of only WPM?
CPM (characters per minute) is more natural for Korean because Hangul syllables are individual characters. WPM is still shown using the common 5-character word conversion so results are easy to share internationally.
Does the Hangul typing test work on mobile?
Yes. Use a phone or tablet with a Korean keyboard installed. Results are calculated the same way as on desktop. For best accuracy, avoid paste and type each prompt yourself.
Is Hangul typing the same as learning to read Hangul?
No. Reading Hangul is recognizing letters and syllable blocks. Typing Hangul is motor skill on a Korean keyboard layout. Most learners benefit from both: a free Hangul course for reading, then typing practice for production speed.
