How to Find Your Korean Level (TOPIK & CEFR)

“I’m intermediate” is not a plan. Levels only help when they map to skills and next actions.

Two scales you will see

TOPIK (official Korean exam)

BandLevelsRough ability
TOPIK I1-2Basic survival Korean
TOPIK II3-4Intermediate daily / light academic
TOPIK II5-6Advanced professional / academic

CEFR (A1-C2)

Many apps market CEFR bands. Rough Korean mapping (approximate):

CEFR~TOPIKYou can roughly…
A1I-1Greetings, hangul, very simple sentences
A2I-2Order food, simple past, limited particles
B1II-3Everyday conversation with effort
B2II-4Work-adjacent Korean with gaps
C1+II-5/6Complex discussion, media, professional

Do not treat CEFR labels on marketing pages as official.

Skill checklist (more honest than a label)

Score yourself 0-2 on each:

  1. Hangul speed. Read unfamiliar words without romanization
  2. Particles: 은/는, 이/가, 을/를 under time pressure
  3. Speech levels. Choose 해요 vs 합니다 vs 반말 correctly
  4. Listening. Understand slow native audio without subtitles
  5. Production. Say a 4-5 sentence self-intro without a script
  6. Reading. Short news or webtoon with dictionary help
  • 0-4 total: solid beginner path (Hangul → structured A1-A2)
  • 5-8: lower intermediate. Add production + timed listening
  • 9-12: intermediate+. TOPIK II practice + immersion

Common self-rating errors

  • Drama fluency illusion. Understanding with English subs ≠ listening skill
  • Anki score inflation. Recognizing cards ≠ producing sentences
  • Streak vanity: 200-day Duo streak can still be A2
  • Under-rating speaking fear. Silent study hides production gaps

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between TOPIK and CEFR?
TOPIK is Korea’s official proficiency test (levels 1-6). CEFR is the Europe-origin A1-C2 scale used by many language products. They are not identical, but rough mappings help you compare apps and courses.
What TOPIK level is beginner conversational?
Roughly TOPIK I level 2 / low TOPIK II for basic daily conversation. True workplace Korean is usually TOPIK II level 4+.
Can an app placement test replace TOPIK?
No. Placement quizzes estimate a study band. TOPIK is a timed, official credential for school, work, and visas.
How often should I re-check my level?
Every 2-3 months of consistent study, or before buying a new course/exam prep pack.
Where can I check my level on Chamelingo?
Use the free level quiz on chamelingo.com/quiz, then follow a structured path and TOPIK guides as you advance.
