TOPIK Scores & Levels Explained: 1 to 6

TOPIK scores look confusing because the PBT and IBT use different numerical scales. The level is the useful output: TOPIK I awards Levels 1-2, while TOPIK II awards Levels 3-6.

The current NIIED overview lists the following score bands. Always check the official TOPIK/NIIED page again before your exam because test rules can be revised.

NIIED's current public overview uses a 400-point scale for TOPIK I IBT and a 600-point scale for TOPIK II IBT.

Do not convert an IBT score into a PBT score with a simple percentage. Use the level thresholds for the format you actually took.

What the levels are for

A TOPIK level is a standardized proficiency result, but the required level depends on the organization using it. One university program may ask for Level 3, another Level 4. An employer or administrative process may set another threshold.

So your study target should be written like this:

“I need TOPIK II Level 4”

not merely:

“I want a good TOPIK score.”

That turns preparation into a concrete margin problem. If Level 4 is your goal, train above the cutoff rather than planning to land exactly on it.

Give yourself a buffer

Practice scores move. A listening set may suit you; the next one may expose weak vocabulary. Test-day stress also costs points.

A practical approach is to aim for a recurring practice score comfortably above your required cutoff. Then diagnose the weakest section instead of endlessly repeating full tests.

For TOPIK II, that often means separating preparation into listening strategy, reading strategy, and writing strategy.

Why section balance matters

A total score can hide a weak skill. If your reading is strong enough to carry weak listening during practice, the weakness still creates risk.

Track each section independently:

• raw or scaled score
• question type missed
• vocabulary gap vs time-pressure mistake
• whether you changed a wrong answer on review
• recurring grammar patterns you failed to recognize

PBT or IBT?

The level certificate is the key outcome, but the test experience differs. IBT uses a computer and typed writing; PBT uses the traditional paper format. Practice in the same format you register for.
