Explanation

Say 안녕히 가세요 to the person who is leaving while you remain. The verb 가다, “to go,” points toward the listener’s departure.

A shop worker may say 안녕히 가세요 to a customer walking out. A host may say it to a guest leaving the home. A teacher who remains may say it to students departing.

If you are the person leaving and the listener stays, switch to 안녕히 계세요. Thinking about movement is more reliable than memorizing an English translation.

Among friends, 잘 가요, 잘 가, or 또 봐요 may sound more relaxed. 안녕히 가세요 remains a conventional polite goodbye.

Examples

조심해서 가세요. 안녕히 가세요.

josimhaeseo gaseyo. annyeonghi gaseyo.

Go carefully. Goodbye.

오늘 와 주셔서 감사합니다. 안녕히 가세요.

oneul wa jusyeoseo gamsahamnida. annyeonghi gaseyo.

손님, 안녕히 가세요.

sonnim, annyeonghi gaseyo.

Goodbye, customer.

Mini dialogue

저 이제 갈게요.

I will leave now.

네, 안녕히 가세요. 다음에 또 봐요.

Okay, goodbye. See you again next time.

Common mistakes

  • Do not say 안녕히 가세요 to the person staying behind when you leave; that reverses the movement encoded by 가세요.
  • Do not assume this is the only polite goodbye. Context may favor 잘 가요, 또 봐요, or 수고하세요.

How to practice

  1. Picture the listener physically or socially departing.
  2. Use 안녕히 계세요 instead when you depart and the listener remains.
  3. Use a friendlier alternative when the relationship and tone are less formal.
