Ignore the English word “goodbye” and track the listener instead. The listener goes: 가세요. The listener stays: 계세요.
The speaker can be either the person leaving or the person staying. What matters is the movement or position of the person being addressed.
Shops, offices, homes, and classrooms make the distinction easy to visualize. Put both people into the scene before answering.
Friendly alternatives exist, but this drill builds the directional rule so you can recognize and use both conventional forms correctly.
How to practice
- Point mentally at the listener.
- Listener leaves → 안녕히 가세요.
- Listener stays → 안녕히 계세요.
