잘 가요 means “go well” and works as a friendly polite goodbye. 잘 가 is the casual 반말 version.
These expressions are common with friends, peers, classmates, dates, and familiar coworkers. They sound less ceremonial than 안녕히 가세요.
Use 잘 가요 when you want a warm polite tone without the full formal directional goodbye. Use 잘 가 only where casual speech is already established.
A natural reply can be 응, 또 봐 or 네, 다음에 봐요. The exchange often points toward seeing each other again.
Examples
오늘 즐거웠어요. 잘 가요!
oneul jeulgeowosseoyo. jal gayo!
Today was fun. Bye!
조심히 잘 가.
josimhi jal ga.
Get home safely.
잘 가요. 다음 주에 봐요.
jal gayo. daeum jue bwayo.
Bye. See you next week.
Mini dialogue
나 이제 집에 갈게.
I am going home now.
응, 잘 가! 도착하면 연락해.
Okay, bye! Message me when you arrive.
Common mistakes
- Do not use 잘 가 casually with someone who expects 존댓말.
- Do not treat 잘 가요 as the standard service farewell in every shop; 안녕히 가세요 or 감사합니다 may fit better.
How to practice
- Match 요 or no 요 to the existing speech level.
- Add 조심히 or 조심해서 when wishing someone a safe trip home.
- Use 또 봐요 when the next meeting is more important than the departure itself.
