고 vs 아서/어서 (sequence)

Try it freeContrast quizPick the right form in a mini quiz.Open →

Explanation

V-고 links actions or qualities: 먹고 가요; 예쁘고 똑똑해요.

-아서/어서 can mark natural sequence or reason: 가게에 가서 샀어요.

For tight “as soon as,” prefer -자마자 over either form.

Mistake: chaining five -고 clauses when a reason or time connector is clearer.

Level: elementary. Read both sides of the contrast, say the examples out loud, then write one correct and one incorrect sentence and fix it.

Cross-link: open the related grammar or tools page the same day so the fix sticks in your study graph.

Examples

양치하고 자요.

I brush my teeth and sleep.

집에 가서 쉴 거예요.

I’ll go home and (then) rest.

Common mistakes

  • Translating the English pair word-for-word without checking which Korean form carries the real distinction.
