처음 뵙겠습니다 respectfully states that this is the first meeting. 만나서 반갑습니다 expresses that you are pleased to meet the person.
The first is especially useful in formal introductions, business meetings, interviews, and meetings with someone senior. The second works across formal and ordinary polite introductions.
They are not mutually exclusive. A complete formal introduction can be 안녕하세요. 처음 뵙겠습니다. 만나서 반갑습니다.
In a warmer everyday meeting, 안녕하세요. 만나서 반가워요 may be enough. Choose the formality of the entire introduction, not one phrase in isolation.

Common mistakes
- Do not describe the two phrases as exact synonyms; they contribute different meaning.
- Do not use 처음 뵙겠습니다 after an established relationship unless the context is playful or corrective.
How to practice
- Use 처음 뵙겠습니다 to mark a respectful first encounter.
- Use 만나서 반갑습니다 to express positive feeling about the meeting.
- Use both when a formal introduction benefits from both meanings.
