Explanation

With someone you do not know closely, begin in 존댓말. 주말에 시간 있어요? asks whether they are free this weekend, and 같이 커피 마실래요? invites them for coffee. The ending -(으)ㄹ래요 asks about the other person’s willingness or intention, so tone and relationship still matter.

Make a vague invitation concrete with a time and place: 토요일 오후 세 시 어때요? or 강남역 근처에서 만날까요? If they suggest another time, 언제가 괜찮아요? asks what works for them. Confirm with 네, 그때 봐요—“Okay, see you then.”

Respect a refusal without bargaining. 미안하지만 이번 주는 어려울 것 같아요 is a soft “I’m sorry, but this week seems difficult.” A respectful answer is 괜찮아요. 다음에 봐요. The useful language skill is understanding both invitation and boundary, not forcing a preferred outcome.

Do not switch to 반말, use 오빠 or 누나, or assume physical familiarity automatically. If the relationship is comfortable, 말 놓아도 돼요? asks whether it is okay to speak casually. At the end, 오늘 즐거웠어요 and 조심히 들어가요 are warm without making an oversized declaration.

Examples

Jisu: Saturday afternoon works for me.

민수: 같이 커피 마실래요?

Minsu: Would you like to have coffee together?

지수: 좋아요. 어디에서 만날까요?

Jisu: Sounds good. Where shall we meet?

민수: 강남역 근처 어때요?

Minsu: How about near Gangnam Station?

지수: 좋아요. 세 시에 만나요.

Jisu: Good. Let’s meet at three.

민수: 네, 그때 봐요.

Minsu: Okay, see you then.

지수: 네. 주말에 봐요.

Jisu: Yes. See you this weekend.

Key lines

  • 주말에 시간 있어요?: Are you free this weekend?
  • 같이 커피 마실래요?: Would you like to have coffee together?
  • 언제가 괜찮아요?: What time works for you?
  • 미안하지만 이번 주는 어려울 것 같아요: I’m sorry, but this week seems difficult
  • 오늘 즐거웠어요: I had a good time today
  • 말 놓아도 돼요?: Is it okay if we speak casually?

Common mistakes

  • Do not switch to 반말 merely because the conversation is friendly. Wait until both people are comfortable with it.
  • Do not call someone 오빠, 누나, 언니, or 형 just from age information. These terms depend on identity, relationship, and mutual comfort.
  • 사랑해요 is much stronger than “I enjoyed meeting you.” Use a sentence that matches the actual stage of the relationship.
  • A refusal is not a grammar problem to overcome. Acknowledge it respectfully and stop pressing.

How to practice

  1. Practise one invitation, one scheduling question, one acceptance, and one respectful decline.
  2. Use a real day, time, and station in your practice instead of memorizing only 주말 and 강남역.
  3. Keep 존댓말 as the default with a new person and learn 말 놓아도 돼요? as a separate mutual transition.
  4. Match the emotional strength of the sentence to the relationship rather than translating English pet names literally.
