Explanation

The driver will often begin with 어디로 가세요?—“Where are you going?” Give a destination with -(으)로 가 주세요: 홍대입구역 9번 출구로 가 주세요. You can also show an address and say 이 주소로 가 주세요, “Please go to this address.”

A station exit, hotel, large building, or nearby landmark may be easier to communicate than a long street address. When the destination is only approximate, 강남역 근처로 가 주세요 means “Please go near Gangnam Station.” Keep the address visible so the driver can confirm it.

During the ride, 얼마나 걸려요? asks how long it takes. 천천히 가 주세요 asks the driver to go slowly. When you reach the right place, 여기서 내려 주세요 means “Please let me out here,” and 여기 세워 주세요 means “Please stop here.”

For payment, 카드로 할게요 is a simple “I’ll pay by card,” and 영수증 주세요 asks for a receipt. 기사님 is a respectful way to address the driver when you need to get their attention.

Common mistakes

  • Do not rely on an uncertain pronunciation of a long address. Show the written Korean address and confirm the landmark.
  • 여기서 내려 주세요 asks to get out here. 여기에서 가 주세요 would not communicate the same request.
  • Use 기사님 rather than an overly casual form when addressing a driver you do not know.

How to practice

  1. Save your real destination in Korean before the ride and practise reading the station or building name.
  2. Learn the driver’s opening question 어디로 가세요? as a listening chunk, not only as isolated words.
  3. Practise destination, stop, and payment as three separate mini exchanges.
  4. Replace the sample landmark with a place you actually use so the phrase becomes immediately useful.
