The romanization trap

Romanization is fine for day-one pronunciation hints. It becomes harmful when you still read “annyeonghaseyo” instead of 안녕하세요 after weeks of study.
Your brain anchors to Latin letters. Hangul is a system. The longer you delay, the more you rebuild reading twice.
Switch the UI off: Hangul-only flashcards, typing practice, and audio without looking at romanization.
Keep a tiny escape hatch: look up one unknown word’s romanization, then hide it again. Do not read whole dialogues in Latin script.
Examples
안녕하세요
Hello. Train the Hangul shape, not “annyeonghaseyo” as primary.
감사합니다
Thank you. Read the blocks, not the Latin.
Common mistakes
- Writing study notes only in romanization.
- Skipping Hangul typing because QWERTY feels faster short-term.
