Explanation

실례합니다 is a polite “Excuse me.” Use it to get a stranger’s attention, begin a question, or pass through a crowded space.

The phrase is more formal than 저기요, which people often use to call staff or get someone’s attention in everyday settings.

For an apology after a minor bump, 죄송합니다 (“I am sorry”) is usually better.

Examples

실례합니다, 은행이 어디예요?

Sillyehamnida, eunhaengi eodiyeyo?

Excuse me, where is the bank?

실례합니다. 지나가도 될까요?

Sillyehamnida. Jinagado doelkkayo?

Excuse me. May I pass through?

Mini dialogue

A: 실례합니다. 이 버스가 서울역에 가요?

A: Excuse me. Does this bus go to Seoul Station?

B: 네, 가요.

B: Yes, it does.

Common mistakes

  • 실례합니다 is not a direct translation for every English “sorry.”
  • Use 죄송합니다 for a genuine apology.

How to practice

  1. Good before asking directions or a service question.
  2. Use 저기요 to call a server, but do not shout it aggressively.
