Explanation

For a simple self-introduction, say 저는 followed by your name and 예요 or 이에요. Korean often omits “my name” when the context is clear.

Use 예요 after a vowel-final name: 유나예요 or 민수예요. Use 이에요 after a consonant-final name: 존이에요, because 존 ends in a consonant.

저는 is the polite form of “I” plus the topic marker 는. In everyday speech, you can shorten it to 저는 without explaining grammar first.

Examples

저는 소피예요.

Jeoneun Sopi-yeyo.

I am Sophie.

저는 마크예요.

Jeoneun Makeu-yeyo.

I am Mark.

Mini dialogue

A: 이름이 뭐예요?

A: What is your name?

B: 저는 지수예요.

B: I am Jisu.

Common mistakes

  • Do not add a separate Korean word for “name” unless you need emphasis: 제 이름은…
  • Do not use 입니다 in casual conversations unless the setting is formal.

How to practice

  1. Use 저 with polite speech; use 나 with close friends.
  2. With foreign names, choose the ending based on the Hangul spelling.
