Explanation

저는 미국에서 왔어요 literally means “I came from the United States.” It is a natural way to say where you are from.

에서 marks the place you came from with 오다, “to come.” Use a country, city, or hometown before 에서.

If you live somewhere now, use 살다 instead: 저는 서울에 살아요 means “I live in Seoul.”

Examples

저는 캐나다에서 왔어요.

Jeoneun Kaenada-eseo wasseoyo.

I am from Canada.

어디에서 왔어요?

Eodieseo wasseoyo?

Where are you from?

Mini dialogue

A: 어디에서 왔어요?

A: Where are you from?

B: 저는 호주에서 왔어요.

B: I am from Australia.

Common mistakes

  • Do not use 에서 with 살다 for a static home location; say 서울에 살아요.
  • 왔어요 is past tense because you came from that place, even if it is still your home country.

How to practice

  1. Works well in introductions and friendly small talk.
  2. You can omit 저는 when the speaker is already clear.
