Explanation

이거 means “this thing” and is ideal when you can point at an item. 얼마예요? asks its price.

This is a polite, simple question for markets, stores, and cafés. You do not need to know the item’s Korean name.

A seller may answer with a number followed by 원, the Korean won. For example, 오천 원이에요 means “It is 5,000 won.”

Examples

이 티셔츠 얼마예요?

I tisyeocheu eolmayeyo?

How much is this T-shirt?

오천 원이에요.

Ocheon won-ieyo.

It is 5,000 won.

Mini dialogue

A: 이거 얼마예요?

A: How much is this?

B: 만 원이에요.

B: It is 10,000 won.

Common mistakes

  • Do not use 몇 시예요, which asks the time.
  • 원 follows the number: 오천 원, not 원 오천.

How to practice

  1. Pointing while saying 이거 is natural.
  2. Use 그거 for “that near you” and 저거 for “that over there.”
