Explanation

같이 means “together” and 먹어요 means “eat.” In a friendly context, 같이 먹어요 is a simple suggestion: “Let’s eat together.”

Korean present polite forms often work as gentle invitations. You can add a meal or place to make the plan clear: 점심 같이 먹어요 or 식당에서 같이 먹어요.

For a more explicit question, say 같이 먹을래요? This asks whether the other person would like to eat together.

The phrase is warm but still polite. It works well with classmates, colleagues, and acquaintances when the relationship is comfortable.

Examples

점심 같이 먹어요.

Jeomsim gachi meogeoyo.

Let’s have lunch together.

오늘 저녁에 같이 먹을래요?

Oneul jeonyeoge gachi meogeullaeyo?

Would you like to eat together tonight?

Mini dialogue

A: 점심 먹었어요?

A: Did you eat lunch?

B: 아직요. 같이 먹어요.

B: Not yet. Let’s eat together.

Common mistakes

  • 같이 means together; it does not mean “with” in every grammar pattern.
  • Avoid using casual 먹자 with people you should address politely.

How to practice

  1. Use 점심 같이 먹어요 for an easy lunch invitation.
  2. With someone senior or in a formal setting, 같이 식사하실래요? is more respectful.
