Explanation

체크인 is the Korean loanword for check-in. 체크인해도 돼요? asks whether it is okay or possible to check in now.

The pattern -아/어도 돼요? asks permission: “Is it okay if I…?” It is useful in hotels and many other practical situations.

If you have arrived early, add If you only need to leave luggage, ask

A staff member may say 아직 안 돼요, “not yet,” or 네, 가능합니다, “yes, it is possible.”

Examples

Jigeum chekeuinhaedo dwaeyo?

Can I check in now?

Jimeul meonjeo matgyeodo dwaeyo?

Can I leave my luggage first?

Mini dialogue

A: 안녕하세요.

A: Hello. Can I check in now?

B: Yes, that is possible. Please show your passport.

Common mistakes

  • 돼요 is the correct spelling in this permission pattern, not 되요.
  • 맡기다 means leave something in someone’s care; it is useful for luggage storage.

How to practice

  1. Appropriate at hotel reception.
  2. 체크아웃 is check-out; do not use 체크인 when you are leaving.
